The Netherlands ranks tenth among the countries with the highest wine consumption per capita in the world, with 24.5 liters. The vines are said to have been planted in Limburg in the south of the Netherlands as early as 1324. Today the Dutch cultivate around 250 hectares of vineyards; which is almost the same as the Swiss canton of Thurgau. The northern European country imports wine from all over the world because the wines produced in its own country cannot quench the thirst of the Dutch.
The ninth and eighth places in the ranking are shared by two countries, Spain and the Czech Republic. Residents of both countries consumed approximately 25.3 liters of wine in 2022. While Spain is the country with the largest vineyard area in the world, with an area exceeding 950,000 hectares, the Czech Republic also has its own wine production. With over 17,000 hectares of vineyards, more area of grapes is grown in the Czech Republic than in Switzerland.
An average of 26.1 liters of wine per person was consumed in Australia in 2022. Although the remote country is known for its strong Shiraz, lighter Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay have been increasingly produced lately. Our insider tip: Sparkling wines from Australia’s southern island of Tasmania.
Germany is also represented in the top 10, with an average of 27 liters of wine per capita in 2022. In the land of magical Rieslings and characterful Pinot Noirs, the most important thing when it comes to selling wine is price. The German wine market is one of the most price sensitive markets in the world.
Our neighboring country, Austria, ranks fifth in the ranking. In 2022, Austrians will average an impressive 30.8 liters per capita. One reason for this high value is the numerous Heurigen restaurants serving mostly local Austrian wines.
Who would have thought: With an average of 35.5 liters of wine per capita in 2022, the population of our small country is one of the most wine-loving countries in the world. Since the approximately 100 million liters of Swiss wine produced annually can hardly meet consumption, Switzerland imports wine from all over the world, especially from Italy.
Italy is one of many countries where wine consumption is decreasing. However, an average value of 44.4 liters per person was recorded for 2022. Italians prefer to drink their own Italian wine, how could it be otherwise?
It’s a bit surprising that it came in second place because France’s wine country was probably the first to be valued by many people. With an average of 47.4 liters of wine per capita, France is just ahead of Italy but well behind the first-place country.
The Portuguese population drank an incredible 67.5 liters of wine on average in 2022. Divided into 0.75 liter bottles this works out to almost two bottles per week. Wine is not only an integral part of Portuguese culture, but also a leading culture worldwide.
