Matthew Vaughn first made waves as a director with the cool gangster film ‘Layer Cake’. He showed even more class with the fantasy tip “The Starwalker” and “X-Men: First Decision”. But most of all, many film fans know and celebrate him for his over-the-top comedy adaptations such as ‘Kick-Ass’ and the ‘Kingsman’ films. But could he make a ‘Star Wars’ movie? He would like that, but he would also like to make clearer demands that would drive the fans “crazy,” as he did when he appeared on the podcast certain.
Vaughn wants an epic Star Wars reboot
In his opinion, the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is currently going in the wrong direction: “’Star Wars’ is the Skywalker family, and I think that’s where it’s going wrong now: they’ve forgotten that. They did it brilliantly on television, but that requires an epic new film.” And Vaughn also wants the old characters and therefore a reboot:
He would be right there “if they told me they were rebooting Star Wars and I could do my version with Luke Skywalker, Solo and Vader. Everyone would say you’re an idiot for trying, but that would appeal to me.
According to the ‘Kick-Ass’ director, you shouldn’t be afraid of fan reactions: ‘Everyone is going crazy, but let’s just deal with it.’ According to Vaughn, this is the only way to reach “a new generation”. You have to “make the movie for them.” And what about the old generation that has idolized ‘Star Wars’ for decades? If the reboot is good enough, maybe they’ll enjoy it too.
Vaughn asks: Why are the ‘Star Wars’ characters so sacred?
But Vaughn should also know that a “Star Wars” reboot isn’t very likely. According to his own statement, he doesn’t fully understand it. After all, James Bond and various cartoon characters are constantly rearranged to tell new stories together with them. He himself is planning a ‘Kick-Ass’ reboot. That’s why he asks the question: Why are the ‘Star Wars’ characters ‘so sacred that they haven’t been reimagined for new audiences since 1977’?
By the way, he probably doesn’t see his idea as a creative bankruptcy, as remakes and reboots are often described by some fans – on the contrary. As he says at one point in the podcast, creativity always comes first for him: “Creativity should always be the driving force behind every decision, and then you think about how you can make money with it. If you try to make money up front, you’re going to destroy some great brands.”
