This week, the new additions to Netflix are all about the in-house original series, of which the streaming service serves several new international representatives and new seasons with well-known and beloved titles every day. Among them is the coming of age series hit “Elite” from Spain, which is already in its seventh round, as well as the long-awaited release of the first season of the animated video game adaptation “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix“. Although the film offering pales a bit behind this deluge of series, there are still a few carefully selected shockers in the program for horror movie fans that will make your scary month a little more enjoyable.
But let’s not beat around the bush for too long – Here are the Netflix highlights for the week of October 16 to 22, 2023, sorted by day of the week.
Monday: Something for the kids
The week starts slowly on Monday and has two highlights for the small series fans. The French CGI remake ‘Oggy Oggy’ of the cult series ‘Oggy and the Cockroaches’ is coming to Netflix for a third season. In addition, ‘The Smurfs’ will be making the streaming service unsafe in series form from the beginning of this week. But luckily that was just the beginning.
Tuesday: True Crime to Fear and a High School Vampire
Tuesday has more to offer and brings two Netflix originals to the program that couldn’t be more different from each other. On the one hand, the British documentary “The Devil in the Dock” is launched, which examines a strange murder case and a boy’s alleged obsession with the devil. Both true crime and horror movie fans will get their money’s worth here. The second item on the program Tuesday is the Canadian series ‘When I woke up as a vampire’. Vampire horror makes way for fantasy and coming-of-age elements here, making it a light teen fare instead of dark horror.
Wednesday: A survival drama from India and a Japanese RomCom
Midweek brings us two series from Asia to Netflix. In the Japanese rom-com “Turn To Me Mukai-kun”, an attractive long-term single jumps back into the dating game after 10 years and must first relearn how relationships actually work. The thriller series “Kaala Paani” is opposite an Indian Netflix original in which several individuals search for a cure and end up stranded on a desert island. The visually stunning eight-part promises a survival drama with mysterious elements, for which they have of course dug deep into their pockets.
Thursday: the highly anticipated adaptation of a hit video game and crime thriller from Britain
Thursday continues to press the accelerator and has five wildly mixed Netflix originals on offer. With the first season of “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix,” the adaptation of the popular video game “Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon” is finally added to the streaming service’s schedule. Our expectations are high because the creative mind behind the series is Adi Shankar, who was already involved as an executive producer on the critically acclaimed video game adaptation “Castlevania”.
Ubisoft’s ‘Far Cry’ series is considered one of the best video game series of all time, and ‘Blood Dragon’ thrilled fans and critics alike upon its release in 2013. The companion series is set in a dystopian version of the US in the 1990s, in which Dolph Laserhawk has been transformed into a military fighting machine and plans to escape from a maximum security prison. Crazy action meets a surreal setting in six episodes.
The British miniseries ‘Bodies’ unfolds a mysterious killer hunt across four timelines, combining crime, thriller and sci-fi elements that are likely to cause no less confusion and mind-fuck than the German hit series ‘Dark’. As a young man’s body suddenly appears out of nowhere for Detective Seargeant Hasan (Amaka Okafor), she has no idea that police officers were also assigned to the same murder case in 1890, 1941 and 2053. A conspiracy unfolds that spans more than 150 years and threatens the lives of many people in different time periods. The eight episodes star Stephen Graham (“Snatch – Pigs and Diamonds”), “Unorthodox” star Shira Haas, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (“The Queen’s Gambit”) and Kyle Soller (“Star Wars: Andor”) ) On.
In addition, the music comedy series ‘Neon’ from music producer Daddy Yankee, the first season of the romantic comedy series ‘Crashing Eid’ from Saudi Arabia and the Dutch comedy ‘Crypto Boy’ will be released on Thursday.
Friday: Back to the “Elite” – with a big mouth
Friday brings us back to Las Encinas with the 7th season of the Spanish coming of age series “Élite”, where Omar (Omar Ayuso) also returns for an internship. After Samuel’s death, he finds it difficult to let go of his past at the elite school, so he hopes to come to terms with it and put an end to his past. There he meets a number of new and old classmates who are struggling with their own problems. The secret of Ivan’s (André Lamoglia) accident remains unrevealed, while new student Chloe (Mirela Balic) is ensnared in scandalous lies. In any case, we can be curious about what dramas and intrigues await us in the eight episodes of the new season.
Another highlight on Friday is the seventh season of the animated comedy ‘Big Mouth’ by Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg about a group of pubescent teenagers and their more or less supporting hormone monsters. The new season is the penultimate batch of new episodes of the internationally acclaimed Netflix original before the series concludes with an eighth season later next year.
Netflix is also delivering a few new series on Friday with the Turkish sci-fi horror series ‘The Creature’, the South Korean comedy series ‘Doona!’ and the French true crime documentary series “Vjeran Tomic: The Spiderman of Paris.” With the indie comedy ‘Old Dads’, the time-loop horror ‘Flashback’ and the American demon horror ‘Disco Inferno’, the streaming service is programming some original films for the weekend.
Saturday: Manga adaptation from Japan
There’s just one new addition to Netflix on Saturday with the Japanese drama series “Trillion Game.” In it, two old friends start a business and want to use their respective strengths to join the Trillion Dollar Club. The series is based on the successful manga series of the same name, which consisted of 10 parts as of 2021.
Sunday: Nothing is wrong
There are actually no new films and series announced on Netflix for Sunday. But keep your eyes open: as we know the streaming service, things can always change…
