Everything but primitive: This wine for beginners convinces even academics

Primitivo is a popular grape variety grown mostly in the Puglia region of southern Italy. Red wines made from this grape are known for their rich, almost sweet texture and characteristic aromas of Christmas spices. The grape variety originates from Croatia, where it is known as “Tribidrag”. In the 18th century, this variety reached Puglia, where it was called “Primitivo”. However, it is out of the question for him to be primitive, rude or even uncivilized. Rather, the name is derived from the Italian word “primo” (first), indicating their early maturity.

Success as Zinfandel in the USA

Another interesting event in the history of Primitivo is its connection with the American grape variety Zinfandel. The two varieties were found to be closely related, especially in California, where lush wines are successfully grown and pressed. It has now been scientifically proven that Zinfandel and Primitivo are one and the same variety sold under different names.
Versatile as a dining companion

The sheer variety of possible combinations with so many different dishes is simply epic. Primitivo goes well with spicy dishes, grilled meats, pasta with meat sauce and even pizza. Fruity and spicy flavors complement many dishes perfectly. Probably because most examples have both a pleasant sweetness and a soft tannin structure. It’s exactly these characteristics that make Southern Italy’s fruit bomb the ideal entry-level wine. Casual wine drinkers or young consumers will find easy access to the world of red wine at Primitivo.

The Swiss love their Primitivo

In Switzerland, rich and mostly uncomplicated drops can be found in every pizzeria. This is one of the reasons why they are extremely popular in this country. The Swiss palate appreciates the wines’ spicy, full-bodied taste and diverse aromas. I must admit that I drank more Primitivo in my youth than I do today.
