Danger at dusk: This is how you can protect your windows from burglary

The bar lock provides an additional lock that secures the window to the upper and lower window frames when the window is closed. “This device makes it difficult for the burglar to force open the window using a tool,” says Häring.

Window film is a transparent film that is adhered to the outside of the window. “The film reduces the risk of the glass breaking if a thief wants to break it,” says Häring. If you want good protection without spending a lot of money, a combination of window film and bar covering is ideal. This combination is also suitable for old windows with thin frames, where not every device can be installed.

Laminated safety glass, unlike window film, consists of two glass panels with a tear-resistant plastic film between them. If a thief tries to break the window, the glass will break, but the film will still hold the glass together so there will be no hole in the window. “Laminated safety glass provides better protection than window film,” says the expert. But protection is a little more complicated because you have to replace the entire glass.

As a rule, a window sash is hung on two hinges. A tape lock is fitted to the window frame and provides additional third protection. “This makes it difficult for a burglar to force the window open, i.e. push the window out of the frame,” says Häring. Thieves are increasingly choosing this approach because it can be done more quietly than breaking a window.

This device maintains tape backup similarly well. The mushroom head pin and safety strike plate are mounted on the so-called window bracket. As soon as you close the window, the pin and strike plate get stuck. “It is almost impossible for a thief to use a tool to remove the window from its hardware,” says Häring. If you have a large window it is worth fitting some mushroom head pins into the bracket.

A lockable window handle makes it difficult for a thief to open the window if they have already broken it. According to Häring, it makes sense to install a lockable window handle in combination with a window film that provides a certain level of protection.

Häring says a lockable bumper bar is suitable for sliding doors that extend from the balcony to the seat. “Stainless steel latches ensure the window frame is locked so a thief cannot force the sliding door open from the outside.” The bumper bar will automatically lock when you press down. A key is required to open.
