The film industry in Hollywood has been at a standstill since July of this year at the latest. Screenwriters and actors have joined forces in a strike for better working conditions. Now the negotiations are bringing their first successes: American screenwriters have approved a new collective agreement by a large majority.
According to the Writers Guild of America union, the new agreement is expected to last until May 2026 and will include wage increases, higher subsidies for pensions and health care, and regulations on the use of artificial intelligence.
But not everything is back to normal in Hollywood. The actresses are still on strike.
Here are some updates on the continuation of some series:
Amazon Prime Video has announced that it will release a second and final season of the series. Due to the strike this will not be carried out now. The scripts have already been written, so producer Sony Pictures Television could now look for new partners.
With “Periphery,” a new Amazon series is about to be buried. A second season of the well-regarded science fiction series was actually supposed to be released in 2024, but filming is now at a standstill due to the strike. The resulting year-long delays mean the series is no longer profitable.
Fans of the Netflix hit ‘Stranger Things’ are waiting for the fifth and final season. Due to the strike, it is conceivable that the roughly intended start of 2025 will now be postponed to the following year. There is no certainty yet.
At the end of September, the ‘House of the Dragon’ actor announced on his Instagram account that filming had been completed. It was one of the few productions that could continue despite the strike. Firstly, because the scripts had already been written and secondly, because most of the actresses are members of the low-profile British actors’ union Actors Equity. The new season is expected to be released in the summer of 2024.
Actually, the second season of the apocalyptic series ‘The Last of Us’ was believed to be completed in late 2024 or early 2025. Due to the ongoing strike, the start will probably be postponed. However, series creator Craig Mazin revealed during a podcast that writing for the second season was completed before the strike.
After a five-month hiatus, late night shows are returning, bringing a partial end to the strike. Hosts Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel have all already made their comebacks. Only the search for guests could be a little more difficult than usual, as the actresses are currently still on strike.
