Hasn’t paid rent for a long time: Rental nomad wants 100 thousand dollars to move

This Airbnb rental turned into a nightmare for Sascha Jovanovic, 61, an American from Los Angeles. A rented nomad, he has been living in his guesthouse for over a year and a half. Elizabeth Hirschhorn doesn’t pay rent, causes trouble, and doesn’t want to move.

Everything started very harmoniously. The Dutch player has been renting the guest house on his property on Airbnb since January 2019. He lives with his family in the house next door. In September 2021, Jovanovic rented his house to Hirschhorn for a longer stay. According to the Los Angeles Times, he was required to stay in the apartment for six months for about $100 per night.

“I just wanted to be a good host”

Five months later, Hirschhorn reported that the electric shutters were no longer working. During the repair, Jovanovic discovered water damage and mold growth. He wants to correct these deficiencies. He offers the tenant to stay at the hotel or even at his house during this period. He rejects both. Reason: He has high “chemical sensitivity” and does not feel safe in other environments.

The two leave, Jovanovic waits. Ultimately, the lease expires in mid-March. He even lets the woman stay another month so she can find a new place to live: “I just wanted to be a good host,” says Jovanovic. However, this appointment also passes and Hirschhorn stays in the guesthouse. It was in April 2022.

It’s been a year and a half now. The woman still lives in the apartment, but rent payments have not yet been made: The rented nomad already owes Jovanovic more than $50,000. The desperate landlord is said to have even offered her $2,000 in moving assistance.

$100,000 to move

But there too: no reaction. When Jovanovic wants to vacate the apartment, the woman files a complaint with the municipality: The guest house violates rental law regulations and should never have been rented in the first place.

And this works to Hirschhorn’s advantage: the city government takes their side. According to the new regulation, the tenant must provide a legal justification for eviction. The landlord is now trying to sue the woman twice: They want to vacate the house and get back the unpaid rent. The lawyer had clear words for the woman to the Times: “She’s a tenant from hell!”

Hirschhorn was less than impressed. At night, when Jovanonic’s children hear very loud music, they call the police. She demands $100,000 to move out and fights her landlord in court. It is unclear how and when the dispute will end. But one thing is certain: Jovanovic will never again accept anyone into his guesthouse so quickly. (jl)
