Anna lives in a beautiful Vari-apartment with walls that can be moved according to room sizes as needed and a constantly comfortable room climate. Powered by wind and solar energy, the building technology not only automatically regulates air quality and temperature, but also recycles used water and irrigates the rooftop garden. He is very familiar with modern building technology due to his professional background, and says, “When I leave the apartment, the artificial intelligence-supported system automatically reduces energy consumption and increases it again when I approach the building.”

But on sunny days like these, he likes to open the windows to listen to, as he puts it, the buzz of the big city. The traffic noise of old times has mostly been replaced by the very loud hum of two-wheeled electric vehicles. Since the advent of driverless taxis and municipal fleets, privately owned cars have become less common. For example, the 18 vehicles in the building’s underground parking lot are available to all residents through an application. Anna calls these “spinning batteries” because they are integrated into the building’s energy management as buffer storage.

When he opens the windows, he can also hear a completely different buzz: the sound of bees and bumblebees. Well maintained by urban gardeners with a fear of heights, the green façade forms its own vertical biosphere. In addition to creating a paradise for insects, it also naturally regulates the indoor climate in apartments. Anna says the construction industry, which was responsible for 40% of CO2 emissions 30 years ago, has adopted the circular economy principle at just the right time. And fortunately, people learned too. She recalls a fight started among employees by her then-employer, Amstein + Walthert. It operated through an app called ClimateActions and provided lots of good climate tips for everyday life: “In the end, it was small steps that led to a major rethink.”
