A thousand migratory birds tragically died in the US state of Illinois on Friday night. They flew into the window of a convention center in Chicago and died.
True, such tragedies happen every year, especially during the autumn and spring migrations of migratory birds. The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago has not documented such a high number in the last 40 years, the institution wrote on Instagram on Friday.
“It was just frustrating,” bird expert David Willard told the Chicago Tribune. “You see a rose-breasted grosgrain that would have reached the Peruvian Andes if it had not flown into a window in Chicago.” Among other things, the convention center’s illuminated windows and unfavorable weather conditions were cited as possible causes of the incident.
According to CBS, rain and hot weather delayed the migration of the birds, and then the migrations started at the same time. Douglas Stotz from the Field Museum told CBS that this is also the reason why there are many migratory birds in the area. About 200 birds died overnight, Stotz said, in the largest such incident ever in Chicago.
“Every day during the spring and fall migration seasons, our scientists and volunteers rise at sunrise to look for birds flying into the convention center windows,” the Field Museum wrote on Instagram. If the birds survive the collision, they will be treated by veterinarians. The statement said, “If the birds do not survive, their bodies will be taken to the museum.” There they were used for scientific research. Climate change also affects migratory birds. (SDA)
