Many people miss savings opportunities: Why do we stick to expensive mobile phone subscriptions?

Rent, health insurance, food, gas; Some things become much more expensive here too. Many Swiss people are forced to reduce their other expenses to keep their household budget afloat. But as various studies have shown, saving is easier said than done. According to consumer researchers, reasons such as convenience, lack of time, as well as established behavioral patterns prevent us from switching to a cheaper provider, even if we actually intend to. Science calls this difference between our intention and our actual behavior the intention-behavior gap.

We have “inhibitors”

According to experts, some people also fear losing loyalty: If I switch to another provider and later want to return to the current provider, they may treat me worse due to lack of loyalty. And then stay. This reluctance to switch is as evident among mobile phone subscribers as it is among those with health insurance, for example. In the case of the latter, many people cannot find their way in the vast jungle of tariffs offered by providers and are put off by the fact that the transition supposedly takes a large amount of time.

“Many people think that changing mobile phone plans is a complicated task,” confirms Telecom expert Walter Salchli from the online subscription store. “Some have no confidence in a provider other than the one they currently have, and so they decide not to change the tariff or simply postpone it until a future time.”

Despite bill shock, I’m not willing to change

But Sachli, who has worked in the subscription business for various providers for many years and founded start-up alao four years ago, says a lot can be saved through optimization, especially when it comes to mobile phone subscriptions. This is also evident in the fact that many people are now receiving high bills due to roaming abroad. “Most people think they don’t need roaming in their subscription plan because they only use it on vacation, not all the time.”

The result is high bills for many people returning from holiday. More than one in three people received an unexpectedly high bill after the holidays, a Blick survey shows. However, according to the same research, the vast majority (82 percent) are not willing to switch providers despite the price shock. “There are now very cheap subscriptions that include roaming,” says Salchli. According to the expert, several hundred francs a year could easily be earned this way.

“New subscription as fast as ordering pizza”

To help mobile phone customers find the best tariff, online subscription store alao presents all offers at a glance. A special algorithm then analyzes customer needs and creates the most suitable offer for the customer; The system works similarly to Booking.com for hotels. Salchli: “The idea is that customers can find the ideal fare and order online in 5 minutes or less; it takes no longer than ordering a pizza.”
