People who move frequently want more space. But living space is limited. Apartments for rent in Thun BE, where the vacancy rate is particularly low.

The desire for more living space is the main reason for moving to Switzerland. According to a new study, 53 percent of people ready to move want more space.

Starting or expanding a family often triggers a move, according to the analysis, which included the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, among others.

Approximately half of young people aged 18-29 who want or want to have children move for this reason. The desire to own a home also plays a central role.

Housing market is tightening

According to the research, 75 percent of those who want to move are currently living on a rental agreement. Only 48 percent want to become tenants after moving, and buying a detached house is very important.

Problem: Living space is becoming scarcer in Switzerland. The number of vacant apartments is so low these days that experts are talking about housing shortages, even housing shortages, in cities. And there’s no cooling in sight. It is likely that vacancies will continue to decline this year.

Old people have lots of space

This causes rents to increase rapidly. At the same time, many seniors live in rental apartments and houses that offer more space than they need. The highest living space consumption, with approximately 60 square meters per person, is seen in retirees aged 75 and over. The rate of single-person households is high in this age group. However, single seniors often stay in their old apartments where they previously lived with three, four or five other people. The reason: Those who move into a smaller apartment often pay more than before.

According to the research, approximately 45 percent of the Swiss population is currently considering moving. As it is said, the desire to move decreases as we get older. Overall, about half of the Swiss population does not want to move.

For the representative study, a total of 1,094 people in German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland were surveyed about their mobility behavior in spring 2023. The Federal Housing Office, the Fédération Romande Immobilière, the Swiss Homeowners Association and Raiffeisen Switzerland also participated in the study. (SDA/dvo)
