A lot of wine for little money: Prices remain low in these parts of Bordeaux

These two red wine appellations are located on the left bank of the Gironde river. However, their distance from the river is slightly further than the nearby wine-producing regions of Saint-Julien and Margaux. Therefore, soils here generally contain less gravel and therefore store more water. Moulis and Listrac together cover a vineyard area of ​​1,140 hectares, slightly more than Saint-Julien at 900 hectares.

Both appellations can create high-quality and attractively priced wines in the bottle. The first and most important of these are the three Châteaus Chasse-Spleen, Maucaillou and Poujeaux, but there are many other wineries waiting to be discovered. Of course, the wines have no chance in terms of quality compared to the best wines of Margaux and Saint-Julien, but they cost very little. If you’re looking for a lot of Bordeaux for little money, you’ll find it at Moulis and Listrac.

This designation of origin applies to both white and red Bordeaux wines. Selected communities have the right to have their names, such as Castillon, included on the label. The maximum allowable return in this case is slightly lower than when the community name is not specified.

Similar to Moulis and Listrac, Côtes de Bordeaux wines stand out with an attractive price-performance ratio. At the top is Château d’Aiguilhe, whose wines are still enjoyable to drink after more than a decade in the bottle. Moreover, you can do all this without having to dig into your pocket too much when purchasing.

Downwind of its southern Pomerol sibling, the 1,100-hectare neighbor Lalande de Pomerol produces inexpensive Bordeaux wines every year. Merlot plays the undisputed leading role here; most wines also contain some Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc.

You should definitely remember the names of the following wineries: La Fleur de Boüard, Château la Pensée, Château Grand Ormeau and La Chenade. With a few exceptions, these characteristic wines should be drunk within about ten years.
