With an average rating of 4.2 stars, ‘Orphan Black’ landed in the top ten of the best sci-fi series of all time in the FILMSTARTS user rankings – ahead of highlights like ‘Black Mirror’ and also ahead of popular series like ‘Firefly’ and ‘Dark’, which only reached the top 20. So it’s no wonder fans were bitterly disappointed when the BBC America hit was suddenly canceled in 2017 after five seasons without a proper series finale. All the more pleasing is the news that things will now continue – with a spin-off that, in a way, continues the main series.
How reported, The sci-fi series will be titled “Be Black: Echoes‘ and initially consists of ten episodes. The spin-off is in good hands because Anna Fishko, who was already involved in the original series, also serves as showrunner and writer on ‘Echoes’. “Orphan Black” co-creator John Fawcett is also on board as executive producer and director.
Marvel star Krysten Ritter in “Orphan Black: Echoes”
While ‘Orphan Black’ was mainly supported by the extraordinary performance of lead actress Tatiana Maslany, who embodied various clones, ‘Echoes’ focuses on new characters, but was also able to draw on well-known characters from the parent series. The leading roles are played by Marvel stars Kristen Ritter (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones‘ and the British actress Keely Hawes (“Bodyguard“).
In terms of content, the spin-off should follow the themes of the original series and take place after the end of ‘Orphan Black’. It should be about the change and control of the human experience through technical means and introduce different women whose paths change over their time as they try to understand themselves and their different identities.
The start date for “Orphan Black: Echoes” is still open
The BBC America spin-off has already been sold to several international networks and broadcasters, including ITV in the UK and Syfy in Europe. However, it is not yet known when exactly the series will start. However, since production is no longer affected by the screenwriters’ strikes in Hollywood, fans of “Orphan Black” can hope to get more information about the spinoff soon, including where the series will shoot in Germany. For example, seasons 4 and 5 of “Orphan Black” started on Netflix in this country.
