In “Chärtli” or in cash? The answer to this question is increasingly given as “Chärtli”.

Keep the rest! Tipping has long been considered good manners. Those who were satisfied did not request changes. However, as card payments and Twint increased, tipping behavior also changed. We asked in various sectors.

delivery service

Tipping is particularly important in the booming delivery service industry. In some companies, couriers work as freelancers and are paid per delivery. According to Séverine Götz of Just Eat, Switzerland’s largest delivery service company, such employment conditions lead to “constant pressure to complete as many deliveries as possible”. However, in “Just Eat” the couriers work permanently. Tips go “100 percent to interested employees.” According to Götz, new payment methods do not have a negative impact on tips. Many people still tip in cash. The company even keeps statistics on this: Customers in the canton of Zug are the most generous, with an average payment of 4.80 francs, followed by Zurich with 4.10 francs.

Despite Twint and card payments: Cash is the most popular means of payment, says a 2022 survey by the Swiss National Bank. At the same time, alternative payment methods are becoming increasingly popular. The industry association Gastrosuisse follows developments closely: Gastrosuisse asked its members about the evolution of tips in a survey. Nearly half of companies say they haven’t noticed any change in tipping behavior. In fact, there is an increase in one fifth. There is almost no other industry where employees can earn such high rewards from tips. Patrik Hasler, deputy director of the industry association Gastrosuisse, says: “In principle, tips are not wages and are not part of them.”

taxi

One of the places where tipping is traditionally given is a taxi. This wouldn’t be necessary. According to Daniel Laubacher of Astag, the Swiss Commercial Vehicle Association, tariffs that include tips are officially set in taxi regulations in most places. But Laubacher says: “An additional tip is always a nice gesture and a sign of a satisfied customer.” Taxi drivers and chauffeurs are certainly noticing the change in tipping behavior because, as Laubacher says, paying cashless is “less intuitive.”

hairdressers

Tipping is part of the hair salon. Like many service professions, people in the sector are grateful for “this increase”, says André Hann from the Zurich branch of the association Coiffuresuisse. To ensure this gesture of appreciation survives in the age of electronic payments, many hairdressers and groomers are taking action. “Our employees always tell our customers that they can leave a tip when paying by card,” says Hann. Successfully: Alternative payment options “will not have a negative impact on tips at hair salons.”
