“I’ve always wanted to talk to myself”: The “Weekend Rebels” about the film adaptation of their lives

How does it feel when your own life is made into a film? Because we also find this question interesting, we have created the new ‘German Cinema.’ called in life [doch] geil” edition of our podcast “Screen Love” did not invite the filmmakers, but rather the two real role models for the film “Wochenendrebanen”:

Jason and Mirco von Juterczenka have been traveling to football stadiums for years. Because Mirco once promised his son that he would find a favorite club with him. And for Jason, who is autistic, this is not a decision that should be made quickly. He wants to see all the clubs first…

In the new episode Screen Love: We talk to the weekend rebels

In the film ‘Wonch Rebels’ by director Marc Rothemund, author Richard Kropf and starring Florian David Fitz, Aylin Tezel, Joachim Król and newcomer Cecilio Andresen in front of the camera, the joint father-son adventure is now told (of course very condensed).

In the current edition of the podcast Zauberliebe, as the author of the film review, I first explain in conversation with FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen why we liked ‘Wochenendrebellen’ so much that we chose it as the film of the month of September in our “German cinema is [doch] “horny” selected. In the second part [startet nach 23 Minuten] I then talk to Jason and Mirco from Juterczenka.

It’s about how the film came to be and how much influence the two real protagonists themselves could have had on its execution. Among other things, it becomes clear how important it was to them that autism in particular was depicted realistically. Of course, we also have to ask her what it was like making a cameo and suddenly interacting with her own movie alter egos. For Jason it was even a dream come true…

If you want to learn more, we recommend our 4-star FILMSTARTS review. We praise ‘Wochenendre rebels’ as a film ‘with a lot of heart and humor and a great cast.’ Visit to the cinema from September 28, 2023 We can certainly recommend you.

As already explained, “Wochenendrebanen” is also our film of the month for September 2023 as part of our initiative “German cinema is (still) great!”. To counter the often expressed ‘bias of bland German films’, the editors of FILMSTARTS have decided to start this initiative: every month we select a German film that we particularly liked, inspired or fascinated, for its theatrical release – regardless its size – editorially seen as a blockbuster (i.e. with a number of articles, its own podcast episode and so on).
