When “Sicario” hit theaters in 2015, critics and audiences alike agreed: the dark, tough drug thriller from “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve and “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan is absolutely breathtaking, excellent genre cinema with a top-notch cast. “Sicario 2” by Stefano Sollima could not quite keep up with its predecessor, but was still convincing as a merciless action thriller that gained in complexity thanks to the performance of Benicio Del Toro.
And what about “Sicario 3”? Since the release of “Sicario 2” there has been talk of a possible third installment. Five years later it still hasn’t been published. So should fans of the series slowly give up hope? Not a piece! How reported, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the production team behind ‘Sicario’, were very positive about the current status of ‘Sicario 3’ and confirmed that the film should definitely happen.
“Sicario 3” with Benicio Del Toro?
Basil Iwanyk wasn’t just excited about the idea behind ‘Sicario 3’. The producer also explained that Benicio Del Toro will likely return to play the enigmatic Alejandro Gillick, a former CIA prosecutor who trained as an assassin after his family was murdered by a drug cartel leader. “I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could see Benicio playing this guy forever. I mean, I can recognize Benicio in anything, but with this figure it’s not boring, says Iwanyk.
Due to the current Hollywood strikes, it remains to be seen when the script will ultimately be written and filming can begin. What’s reassuring for fans of the ‘Sicario’ series is that a third installment still seems like a done deal.
