Myth: Rheumatism only occurs with age

“Young people can also be affected by inflammatory rheumatic diseases,” writes rheumatologist and immunologist Peer Aries from Hamburg (D) in his latest book “Rheumatism”. Knowledge instead of myths.” Rheumatism is more common in the elderly, especially after the age of 50. “But age is not the trigger.” Some rheumatic diseases, such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, occur before the age of 16.

Myth: There’s nothing you can do about rheumatism

According to Aries, for a long time it was actually possible to treat the symptoms of rheumatism. Today, there are very effective treatments and medications with very few side effects. And: “The sooner effective anti-inflammatory treatment is started, the faster the pain will subside.” Therefore, Aries advocates going to the doctor if you suspect an inflammatory rheumatic disease. “Rheumatism is no longer a blow of fate.”

3

Myth: If you have rheumatism, you should relax physically

Because rheumatism often manifests itself as joint pain, many rheumatism patients intuitively feel like they need to calm down, according to Aries. “But the fear of exercise and sports is unfounded.” You can prevent joints from stiffening with targeted movement. Additionally, the immune system is strengthened, which delays the inflammatory progression of the disease. Coach: “Light sports such as gymnastics, cycling or swimming are especially recommended.”

Sports, especially light gymnastics exercises, help keep rheumatism under control.

4

Myth: Stiff joints in the morning indicate rheumatism

According to Aries, morning stiffness is more common after the age of 50. If it subsides half an hour after getting up, it is called onset pain. “This is not a symptom suggestive of a specific disease.” Rheumatism is only suspected when the feeling of stiffness lasts more than an hour.

Morning stiffness is not necessarily a symptom of rheumatism.

5

Myth: A new mattress helps against rheumatism

Many mattress stores sell mattresses and pillows that are said to be especially suitable for rheumatism patients. According to Aries, such miraculous beds are among the biggest myths about rheumatology. “The impact of beds has never been studied.”

Myth: No one with rheumatism should have children

Young rheumatism patients are often concerned that the disease may progress and the necessary medications may cause deformities in the child. Koç: “However, today there is nothing against continuing the desire to have children as a rheumatism patient.” However, this requires good planning and detailed consultation with the rheumatologist and gynecologist to adapt the treatment if necessary.

Advert
Young rheumatism patients do not need to postpone their desire to have children.

7

Myth: You can control rheumatism with a healthy diet

Because of fear of side effects of rheumatism medications, many patients prefer the Mediterranean diet, which consists of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables and small amounts of animal products. The expert writes that such a diet prevents inflammation. “But it cannot treat or cure an inflammatory rheumatic disease.” Therefore, ideally, a change in diet should be made in addition to drug therapy. However, it cannot replace them.

The Mediterranean diet contributes to a healthier lifestyle. This may have positive effects on rheumatism.
