2010’s “Percy Jackson – Thieves of Olympus” and its 2013 sequel “Percy Jackson 2 – Under the Spell of the Cyclops” were not particularly popular with fans, the trade press, nor with Rick Riordan, the author of the original book, and ran solid at best at the box office. 10 years later, a series adaptation on Disney+ should make everything better – and at least the participation of Rick Riordan and the first trailers made many fans hopeful.
Now there is a new trailer for ‘Percy Jackson: The Series’, as the remake is officially called in Germany (but ‘Percy Jackson And The Olympians’ in the original). “Percy Jackson: The Series” will be released on Disney+ on December 20, 2023 and will consist of eight episodeswith two episodes published on launch day and the remainder released weekly.
Ideal holiday fodder for fantasy fans and after the first two (teaser) trailers showed very few Olympian gods and goddesses and mythological creatures, the new preview actually delves fully into this fantastic world.
For example, in the trailer, Percy Jackson is attacked by a harpy, discovers that his best friend Grover is actually a satyr with goat legs, and has to deal with a minotaur.
In the first season of ‘Percy Jackson: The Series’, the first book in Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson’ series is adapted into a film: twelve-year-old Perseus ‘Percy’ Jackson’ (Walker Scobell) discovers that he is not a completely normal boy with normal problems, but the son of the sea god Poseidon. Not only that, he’s also accused by the father of the gods Zeus (“John Wick” star Lance Reddick in one of his final roles) of stealing his ruler’s thunderbolt.
Together with his best friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri), who is actually a satyr and secretly watched over him, and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), a daughter of Athena, Percy goes in search of the real perpetrator…
In addition to Rick Riordan, showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who already worked together on the pirate series ‘Black Sails’ and the post-apocalyptic sci-fi series ‘See’, are responsible for ‘Percy Jackson: The Series’. Other prominent names in the cast include Jay Duplass as Hades, the god of the dead, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes, the messenger of the gods, and comedian and actor Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus, god of wine.
