Young people can also be affected by dementia and may not realize it until it is too late.

He is about 90 years old, graying and thin; This is how you imagine a typical person suffering from dementia. False: It is estimated that 1 in 1000 people aged 45-65 are affected. Early dementia often brings many problems and challenges for those affected and their loved ones. The non-profit Alzheimer Research Initiative (AFI) draws attention to this on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21.

Professor, psychological director of the memory center at Jena University Hospital. Kathrin Finke says that, in principle, all types of dementia can occur in the early stages. “These include classic neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s dementia or frontotemporal dementia. Nerve cells in the brain gradually die. Insufficient oxygen supply to the brain, for example from an early stroke, may also cause dementia. Genetic factors are often greater than in late-onset dementia, according to a member of the AFI Scientific Advisory Board.” It plays a role.

“You just find what you are looking for”

Symptoms occurring in younger patients are more likely to raise suspicion of burnout or depression rather than dementia. German neurologist Dr. Michael Lorrain: “When you’re 55 or 60, you don’t think dementia is necessarily forgetfulness. It’s like this in medicine: You only find what you’re looking for. “It can take 2 to 4 years for a person to see a specialist and have the necessary examinations.”

Young people with dementia experience a different burden than older people, according to the AFI. “For those who get sick at a young age, there is a need for a productive person who can be involved and take responsibility in the work environment and family. It is often difficult for both patients and their families to accept the fact that this role can no longer be fulfilled,” explains Prof. Finke.

There is also a lack of offers for young people with dementia. Current care and support offers are generally geared towards the needs of older people. According to the AFI, this could add additional burden to the difficult situation. (gs)
