The fairy tale Neuschwanstein Castle is so beautiful that Walt Disney (1901-1966) used it as a model for his stories. The castle was built by the Bavarian King II in the mid-19th century. It was built by Ludwig (1845-1886). He grew up in the shadow of the crumbling castle of the Knights of Schwangau and was inspired, among other things, by the romantic operas of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) to build a fairy tale castle. The castle offers it all: from an artificial cave to numerous theater-sized halls, there is so much to discover here. Marienbrücke is particularly beautiful with its waterfall and panoramic views.
Alongside the tour of Neuschwanstein, it’s also worth visiting King Ludwig’s youth castle of Hohenschwangau next door.

Eltz Castle is located in the picturesque Elztal, a side valley of the Moselle, and is one of the largest fairy-tale castles in the world. Direct descendants still live in this area today, which has been in the family for more than 33 generations since 1157. Eltz Castle is one of the few castles in the region that has not been destroyed and rebuilt since the Middle Ages, as it is so well preserved. When you enter the huge castle over the stone bridge, you can really feel its rich history.
Nature lovers can hike to the castle from the nearby Moselkern. While walking, you may catch your first glimpse of the beauty of the Middle Ages.

About an hour away from Stuttgart is the traditional Hohenzollern Castle, which rises above the entire surrounding area on a mountain ridge. The ancestral home of the noble family, home to many German emperors, has been located here since the 11th century.
The current castle dates back to the 15th century, but has been modified many times over the centuries. It is very rare for a single noble family to control a castle estate for so long. The last German Emperor II. The Prince of Prussia (45), a descendant of Wilhelm (1859-1941), and his wife Sophie (43) still live here today, but the fairy-tale castle is also open to the public.

The Hohenzollern family also owns Sigmaringen Castle on the Danube, which they use during particularly busy months when their main residence, Hohenzollern Castle, is located. This beautiful property is located high on a rocky cliff in the center of Sigmaringen. The castle is special because, alongside Buckingham Palace and many other castles in London, it is rarely possible to visit the magnificent living quarters of a current European royal family.
You can also find an unusual bit of history here: Frederick Miller (1824-1888) worked as a royal master brewer at Sigmaringen Castle before emigrating to the USA. There he founded Miller Brewing Company, now the second largest brewery in the United States.

Lichtenstein Castle near Honau in Baden-Württemberg sits on the edge of a cliff and is protected by a series of suspension bridges. In 1837, Count Wilhelm von Württemberg (1810-1869) bought the dilapidated medieval castle and converted it into a royal hunting lodge; thus creating a fairy-tale castle that fulfilled all medieval aspirations.
The castle is now in the hands of the fourth generation of the family. The fine details as well as the panoramic view of the valley and the general appearance of the castle make it one of the most beautiful castles in Germany.

Schwerin Castle is located on an island in the middle of Lake Schwerin, Germany’s third largest lake. There was a castle there as early as 973. However, the history of today’s castle dates back to the 19th century. The state parliament of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania meets here today.

Built in 1067, the Wartburg in the state of Thuringia has a magnificent history. It was one of the most important castles in the region at the beginning of the 13th century.
The Wartburg is famous for two reasons: its annual minstrel competition and because of Martin Luther’s (1483-1546) stay in 1521. The church restorer lived here for a year. He used this time to translate the entire Bible from ancient Greek to German in just ten weeks.
