It’s been 18 years since Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt met on ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith” tried to kill each other. Now Amazon is remaking the action movie. But this time as a series.
The film stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was originally set to take on the role of Jane Smith, but left the project due to creative differences. Other cast members include Michaela Coel, John Turturro and Paul Dano. It is not yet known which roles they will take on.
Like the original film, the series is about two spies who get married without knowing they are in the same profession – and are on a mission to kill each other. But the series should strike a different tone.
Each episode follows her on a different mission for a mysterious agency. Prime’s description reads: “As the cracks show, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”
Glover co-created the series with Francesca Sloane, who serves as showrunner. Sloane previously collaborated with Glover on ‘Atlanta’ and ‘Fargo’.
There is already a first teaser. The clip shows Glover and Erskine running away from explosions. “Have you ever killed anyone?” Glover asks Erskine. “Do I look like this?” she replies, before showing a scene of her loading a gun. “This marriage is off to a good start,” he jokes.

“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is expected to debut on Amazon Prime Video in 2024.
