World Championships in Geneva, Montreux VD, Lucerne, Basel and Aarau AG: Switzerland was the center of the WorldSkills world last week. Professional championships were held in all five cities. In fact, these should have been located in the center of Shanghai in the fall. Corona regulations in China thwarted the plan, now WorldSkills Competition 2022 will take place decentralized all over the world. Also in Switzerland.
Young Swiss professionals are once again impressed by these competitions and collect medals.
Gold to Silvan Wiedmer and Yunus Ruff (Industry 4.0)
In the first week of October, two Winterthurers Silvan Wiedmer and Yunus Ruff got off to a golden start. The two automation experts together won the gold medal in the new WorldSkills Industry 4.0 competition held in Stuttgart, Germany. The duo won the title at the EuroSkills last year in Graz, Austria. Wiedmer happily says, “It’s such a relief to finish with such a result after two years of hard work.”
Bronze (Mechatronics) for Dario Flükiger and Adrian Matthys
At the same time, the world championships in mechatronics took place in Stuttgart. Dario Flükiger of Lützelflüh BE and Adrian Matthys of Möhlin AG took bronze, the fourth consecutive Swiss WorldSkills medal in this discipline. “Asian competition is getting stronger from one event to the next and it’s getting harder for us to keep up with this high level,” says Nicolas Gödel, expert on the performance of the auto duo.
Silver for Tim Oberli (Hotel Reception)
You want to check in to the hotel with Tim Oberli from Wiesendangen ZH. Won a silver medal in the Hotel Reception division at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 at the Casino Barrière in Montreux VD. Here it is important to pass a large number of role-playing games, in which the “difficult guests” must be served. Only the Singaporean mastered the participant tasks better than Oberli.
Bronze for Romain Mingard (carpenter)
The WorldSkills Competition 2022 took place last week in Basel in woodworking jobs (builders, carpenters, carpenters): Romain Mingard of Couvet NE won the bronze medal for builders. The Swiss participants did well in the other two disciplines, but narrowly missed the medals in fourth and fifth place.
Gold for Juliana Thöny (confectioner)
At Richemont Technical School in Lucerne, the Swiss women really did have a home game: here they prepare for major championships in professional bakery, confectionery and confectionery, and this is also where the 2022 WorldSkills Challenge takes place. Last week, Juliana Thöny from Oberlunkhofen AG took first place in the “Cake & Confectionery” category. Specialist Vanessa Schnyder: “Experts all agreed that Juliana was in a class of her own.”
Bronze for Vera Stocker (baker)
The title fights for the bakers took place in the same place. For Vera Stocker of Gunzwil LU, they started disastrously: On the first day, she forgot the baguettes in the oven and therefore had to give up ten percent of the possible points. Still, it’s still enough for bronze. The reigning Swiss U23 champion in the 400m hurdles: “I’ve never been happier for a medal and I’m proud that it’s enough.”
Silver for Nina Manser (print technologist)
secured in Aarau print technician nina manser From Kesswil TG silver in your profession. Third consecutive medal win for Switzerland in this discipline. The series started in Abu Dhabi five years ago – then Janine Widmer won the bronze medal, today she is an expert and coach of Manser.
When will more medals come?
Most of the medal decisions are still pending. For example, there are title fights in Cleveland (USA), Brampton, Canada, Bordeaux, France, Helsinki, Finland and Bern this week: this is where bodywork metal workers and electronics technicians compete. The final competitions will not be held until the end of November. The previous seven medals are probably just a snapshot.
