5 days instead of 4: This is how the Gurten Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary

Today the organizers of the Bern Gurten Festival announced their plans for the anniversary edition. For the big birthday in 2023, there will be music one day longer on the house mountain.

You can read exactly what and how it is celebrated here:

Anyone who knows the Bern Festival well will wonder: how is a 40th anniversary possible – when the first edition of the Gurten Festival took place in 1977?

Between 1979 and 1987, the organizers switched to a two-year cycle. The festival was therefore only held seven times in ten years.

In the beginning, the “Güsche” also had the somewhat awkward name “Internationales Folkfestival Bern-Gurten” – and the bands were called Fritz Widmer, Gorps & Kniri or Schwyzerörgeli-Fründe Bärn. The “Gurtenfestival”, as it is known today, only existed in the 1990s. The acts became more global and carried names such as Bob Dylan, Vaya Con Dios, Zucchero or The Cure.

From the year 1991 – and the era of the “Gurtenfestival” known today, an anniversary edition would actually have been announced for 2021. However, as the festival could not take place in 2020 and 2021, as is known, the next edition in July 2023 will be taken into account with the 40th birthday.

The Gurten Festival has been held four days in a row since 2004, before that there were only three. There is now a fifth day for the anniversary edition: in addition to the days Wednesday to Saturday, there are also concerts on Sunday 16 July 2023.

According to the organizers, the musical program will focus on the main stage area on Sunday. There will be three acts each on the main and forest stage. The three dance tents will also be open.

As an exception, there should be a limited number of “40th edition” passes (5-day passes). According to the festival organizers, the 5-day pass is only available during this exclusive promotion; in the regular presale, Sundays are then only offered as a 1-day pass.

The “40th Edition” passes and the also limited “Rock The Hill” passes – 4-day passes for the price of three days – will be available in the Gurtenfestival ticket shop on Wednesday 16 November from 6 p.m. A maximum of two tickets can be purchased per person.

The regular presale will finally start on December 6 at 12 noon. The first acts will also be announced at this time. (lacquer)
