The issue of wine shelf life is complex and personal. Some like young and fresh wines, others prefer older wines. In principle, the lifespan of wines can be divided into four stages. However, this classification is only meaningful if the wines have any storage potential. The duration of individual stages can also vary greatly depending on the year and type of wine.

Many wines are fresh and fruity at this stage. They’re accessible but often don’t bring out the full depth of flavor. The majority of wines are drunk at this stage.

During this time, some wines develop complex aromas and flavor profiles. Red wines can gain harmony by obtaining softer and smoother tannins.

After the maturation stage is completed, ideal drinking maturity begins. During the plateau stage, the wine remains stable for a long time and its taste and aroma change very slowly.

After the plateau stage, wine only goes downhill. The fruit gradually fades and musty mushroom notes or unpleasant rotten egg odors develop.

Shelf life of Ticino and Italy wines

With a few exceptions, dry Ticino white wines are intended for immediate consumption within a few years after bottling. Some red wines can be stored for several years. Well-aged bottles of 2007 Castello Luigi Rosso still remain in the plateau stage and offer a drinking experience of the highest level.

The vast majority of fresh Italian white wines also offer the greatest drinking pleasure in their youthful phase, while many Italian red wines are true long-distance runners. The best wines, such as Barolo, Amarone, Brunello di Montalcino or Super Tuscans, often shine even after decades in the bottle.
