At least in the US, further expansion of “The Walking Dead” universe is being pushed forward particularly strongly following the end of the main series last year. The Negan-Maggie spin-off “The Walking Dead: Dead City” only played there in July 2023. And of “The Walking Dead: Daryl DixonThe next offshoot of the zombie franchise started yesterday, September 10, 2023, on the American channel AMC.
In “Daryl Dixon,” the title character (Norman Reedus) travels from the US to distant France and thus to the suspected origins of the undead pandemic, as in the post-credits scene of the spin-off “The Walking Dead: World Beyond.” was hinted at. But how does Daryl suddenly find himself on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean – and in the middle of the still ubiquitous zombie apocalypse?
The opening episode of the new offshoot actually provided a few answers that we don’t want to withhold from you. However, if you don’t want to know anything about the “Walking Dead” series in advance other than the basic premise outlined above, you should read no further at this point.
Daryl vs. the cause
What was already hinted at in the trailers for “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” can now be seen early on in the series itself: Daryl washes up on a small boat on the coast of France. But how and why did he end up here? That’s exactly what the survivor is trying to figure out; the questions form something like the central mystery of the series. It’s all the more amazing that the end of episode 1 sheds some light into the darkness.
So we learn here that Daryl was captured in America and brought aboard a ship belonging to a previously unknown group called The Cause. It is still unclear what exactly this group plans to do. Apparently, however, they kidnap people against their will to subject them to certain experiments – and even cross entire oceans to do so!
There are also rumors that the man who shoots a scientist in the aforementioned “World Beyond” credits scene may have been a member of the group. In Daryl Dixon, The Cause will now be the main antagonist, so we should learn more about her and her motivations as the series progresses.
But it is already known that Daryl incited a mutiny aboard his transport ship, destroying most of the research documents there and fleeing. Genet (Anne Charrier), the leader of The Cause, now wants to get his hands on Daryl at all costs. The upcoming episodes (or possibly the episodes of the already confirmed second season) will show why he was chosen, how the group became aware of him in the first place and what the experiments in question are about.
When will “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” come to Germany?
It will take a little longer before we get the answers in Germany: ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ will not start in this country until the end of 2023 on the Telekom streaming service Magenta TV. To this end, “The Walking Dead: Dead City” will celebrate its German premiere there from October 13.
