“Hackney Diamonds”: What’s Known So Far About The New Rolling Stones Album

Almost 60 years ago, the Rolling Stones released their first album. Since then, the group around Mick Jagger has become one of the longest-lived and most successful rock bands in music history. Still, fans had to be patient with new songs for 18 years. Now the British band has announced a new album entitled “Hackney Diamonds”. What we know about it:

In fact, it hasn’t even been 18 years since the Stones released an album. In 2016 ‘Blue & Lonesome’ was released, but this album contained no new tracks, but twelve covered blues songs. On October 20, 2023 the time has come, fans can look forward to 12 new songs.

The first single from ‘Hackney Diamonds’ is called ‘Angry’ and has already been released, including the music video:

There are also “a few love songs, ballads and country songs,” as the band has already revealed. Here’s the full track listing:

  1. Angry
  2. come close
  3. Depends on you
  4. Bite my head off
  5. Whole wide world
  6. Dreamy skies
  7. To bully
  8. Live by the sword
  9. It’s making me too hard
  10. Tell me honestly
  11. Sweet sounds from heaven
  12. Rolling stone blues

Of course, the Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ron Wood worked on the album themselves, with the drums of the late drummer Charlie Watts featured on three tracks. But as already known, there are also many well-known features:

In a live stream with Jimmy Fallon, the rock band revealed more details about the making of the album. “We finished it pretty quickly, lots of ideas were flying around. We collected them last Christmas,” Keith Richards said on the livestream. Mick Jagger even doubled down and said they were pretty lazy.

The album actually came about in just two months: “We had already done something. And then we just set ourselves a deadline. Keith and I made the songs over Christmas, finished them in January and mixed them in February.” And where does the title of the album come from? ‘Hackney Diamond’, is what a smashed car window in London’s Hackney district is called.

Judging by the initial reactions to the live stream and the song ‘Angry’, Stones fans are pleased so far. One fan raves that the song is a journey back in time to the 1970s. Above all, the Stones are one thing: old, but others say:

But especially after the live stream there are also critical voices. At best this was “bumpy”, at worst it was a “glitch show”, according to the tenor in the music press. (lion)
