Have you ever tripped, bumped into a glass window, or even been hospitalized for your incompetence? As the stories of our readers show, you are not alone in this. Accidents happen very quickly and can happen to anyone. However, as we have shown here, some precautions can be taken against falls.

the most unlucky

I’m the world champion in silly accidents. I sprained my ankle from hitting a stone while swimming in the Limmat. When I was a teenager, I ran through the glass door and fell on the broken glass because I had an argument with my brother. I lost a lot of blood that day. Another time I slipped my skateboard off my hand and lost my fingernail. My finger was bleeding so much that I had to go to the emergency room. I was very clumsy while jogging. I decided to do a few vertical jumps on a wall about a meter high in between. I slipped upstairs and fell on the back of my head. The result was an open rupture, concussion, a three-day hospital stay, and memory loss. A parlor game once had me turn in circles and walk straight for 30 seconds. Because I couldn’t stand up anymore, I fell and broke my metacarpal bone. My surgeon simply said: “I haven’t seen a fracture like this in 50 years.”

painful destruction

I had to dispose of an old, outdated garden cabinet. I wanted to break a plastic stick. For some reason I tilted the bar to my face. When it broke I hit the top of the bar in my face. Result: cut lip, bruised gums, headache. But at least two of my brain cells are unharmed, they always think perfectly and eventually bring me to my grave.

By bike in the ditch

When I was younger, my boyfriend and I wanted to go cycling on a nice summer day. Since I don’t have a bike of my own, her mother took her old bike from the basement. In a pleasant mood, we crossed the fields and meadows and set off towards the forest. I kept hitchhiking into the void as the bike had a quirk. The same thing happened again when I looked at a few birds and did not pay attention. My foot slipped off the pedal and crashed directly into the rims of the front wheel. I flew in a high arc towards the trees and birds, and finally landed in the ditch. I was shaking all over and I was dirty from head to toe. Also, my feet were humming violently. But still, nothing happened but a few bruises and I was able to move on. However, I will never go for a trip again on a bike that is undersized and in fact needs an overhaul.

It was clear

My mom wanted to give me a garden chair that stretched from the terrace balcony four feet below the lawn. I told him to let it go, it wasn’t going very well. And as I expected, the chair leg caught my eye. Thanks to plenty of ice and four days of antibiotic cream, everything was fine again.

wrong nose

I used to smoke a nice hookah. After I lit the charcoal and closed it with a brass cap, I wanted to smell the hookah after a short while. Unfortunately I got my nose a little too close to this cap and the thing was already red. That’s why I got my nose stuck in this cover. I pulled my head back in shock, the blanket came with it, and I burned my fingers trying to rip it off my nose. After that, I walked around with a pretty bad burn on my nose for days and had to listen to silly jokes from my staff.

1:0 for the egg roll

A few years ago we sat down and had dinner by a small chili on the wall. Realizing that my phone had fallen out of my pocket, I reached back, lost my balance and fell 2.5 meters to the ground. Bruises, bruises and minor ailments – but fortunately no more. The spring roll on the second hand survived unharmed. The irony of history: I stopped working at Suva only a few weeks ago.

Toothless by Lido

When I was about ten, I dived too fast into the low pool on the Lido in Lugano because I wanted to avoid another kid. I then dropped most of my right incisor onto the concrete floor. I am now over 40 years old so I recently went back to the dentist.

Twice as many accidents occur in Switzerland at home, in the garden and during leisure time as at work. Not only does this have unpleasant consequences for those involved in the accident, but the Swiss economy loses 7.7 million working days each year. The most important tips for accident-free leisure activities are: Assess your own abilities realistically, prepare well for leisure activities such as hiking, and identify potential sources of danger early. It’s important to eliminate tripping hazards in the home, make sure there’s enough light, secure shelves and furniture to walls, and keep toxins and chemicals away.
