Philips OLED TV have two main advantages over the competition: their backlight, Philips Ambilight, is still unique on the market. They also support Dolby Vision and HDR10+ HDR technologies. Most competitors use only one of the two established HDR formats.
MediaMarkt gives you free VAT until September 11th on participating Philips products. With the discount, you only pay 2,027.39 euros including shipping costs for the Philips OLED 808 in the popular 65-inch format. The TV has never been cheaper, the previous best price was around 2,300 euros.
Don’t be surprised: the VAT discount is only calculated in the shopping cart. If added bonus you receive a small 10,000 MyMediaMarkt points upon purchase. If you have cracked the 10,000, you can exchange it for a coupon of 10 euros. Or you can exchange 5,000 points for a 5 euro voucher and save even more points.
Philips OLED TVs: the alternative to Samsung, LG and Sony
The Philips Ambilight TV backlight is a reason for many to buy a Philips TV. LEDs on the back of the TV light up millions of colors and thus create a unique atmosphere in your home cinema. Another plus is the mentioned HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support. For example, Samsung only uses HDR10 +, while LG and Sony have opted for Dolby Vision.
The Philips OLED 808 is also well equipped in other areas. You get all modern game features such as 2x HDMI 2.1 for 4K and 120FPS gaming and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and G-Sync support. The latter is especially beneficial if you want to connect your gaming PC to an NVIDIA graphics card.
But to the main point: The picture looks really good. The experts at hifi.de give a 9.2 out of 10 for the image quality and confirm that the Philips OLED has “excellent image quality”. The most interesting feature for home cinema fans is certainly the ‘Filmmaker Mode’, which renders the image as neutral as possible and as close to the filmmaker’s vision as possible.
There is a deduction in the B grade for handling. A timeshift function and USB recording are missing and the TV menu is somewhat clumsy to use. But that’s complaining on a high level.
If you want to save yourself a soundbar: the Philips OLED 937
The OLED 808 presented above has an incredibly good sound, but you can still get a lot out of it with a soundbar. The Philips OLED-937 is there the perfect alternativebecause he has one soundbar in its stand built-in. And it doesn’t just come from anyone, but from the hi-fi experts at Bower & Wilkins. MediaMarkt also gives you the VAT on this model.
The Philips OLED 937 sits slightly above its little brother. As this is a last year model, it’s relatively cheap for a premium TV. In terms of image quality, it is slightly ahead, but the equipment is the same for both models. As expected, the OLED trumps 937 when it comes to sound. The sound is powerful and detailed and can certainly compete with other solo soundbars. But you also have to be aware that there can’t be bombastic surround sound like in the cinema.
