Shocking scientists: Eight types of microplastics found in human heart

The smallest plastic particles are everywhere in our environment. Microplastics are formed by the decomposition of plastic waste in nature due to wind and weather conditions. Microplastics are also made specifically for certain products such as toothpaste, body lotion or scrub. No wonder microplastics also get into our bodies.

Small particles have already been found in the intestines, blood and even breast milk. For the first time, researchers have been able to detect microplastics in the human heart, as a new study from the US shows. The scientists were able to identify eight different types of plastic.

In addition, microplastics in all blood samples

For the study, the researchers took blood and heart tissue samples from 15 patients before and after heart surgery. The purpose of double sampling is to investigate whether microplastics are mixed into the blood during open heart surgery. Microplastics could be detected in the samples by imaging and microscopic methods.

In the tissue samples, the researchers found particles ranging in size from 20 to 500 micrometers, made from eight different types of plastic. Several thousand individual pieces of microplastic were found in individual samples. Plastic particles could also be detected in all blood samples.

Uncertain effects on health

The validity of the study is limited as the researchers were able to take only a small number of samples in this study. However, it is frightening that even types of microplastics can be found in the heart.

It is important to do more research now. This is the only way to learn how microplastics enter the body during surgical procedures and the health effects of the particles.

Government representatives from 175 countries met in Paris in June to reduce plastic waste. Solutions for reducing the production, disposal and recycling of plastic were discussed. The dangers of microplastics and supporting developing countries in the fight against plastic waste were also topics of discussion. (jl/AFP)
