Risk to the fetus when taking anti-inflammatory drugs

Relationship in the use of drugs non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) In cases of oligohydramnios, i.e. low levels of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby, and fetal kidney dysfunction, this triggers alerts in health systems.

In the latest review of data from a 2022 study he conducted UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority Some cases of ductus arteriosus constriction, or narrowing of the connecting blood vessel in the baby’s heart, have also been identified at this early stage.

NSAIDs are contraindicated in the third trimester of pregnancy. If the use of a systemic NSAID is necessary after the 20th week of pregnancy, the lowest dose should be prescribed for the shortest possible time and additional neonatal monitoring should be considered if it is used for several days.

Out of a total of 1092 pregnancies that were exposed to NSAIDs during the second and/or third trimester, 41 (3.8%) cases of oligohydramnios were observed. This compares with 29 (2.5%) of a total of 1154 pregnancies exposed to NSAIDs in the first trimester.

NSAIDs can also prolong bleeding time, due to their antiplatelet effect, and can inhibit uterine contractions, leading to delayed or prolonged labor.

in National Administration for Pharmacy and Medicines of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) Various commercial products containing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been registered.

Such as: diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid, ketoprofen, ketorolac, meloxicam, piroxicam, dexketoprofen, celecoxib, etoricoxib. Acetylsalicylic acid, ketoprofen, ketorolac, meloxicam, piroxicam, dexketoprofen, celecoxib and etoricoxib.

Accordingly, in 2020, Panama issued Security Note 068-20/CNFV/DFV/DNFD dated November 18, 2020, entitled: “Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): avoid use in pregnant women 20 weeks or more.

It also recommends considering prenatal monitoring for oligohydramnios if the mother has been exposed to NSAIDs for several days after the 20th week of pregnancy.

NSAIDs should be discontinued if found oligohydramnios or if the NSAID is no longer considered clinically necessary.
