Postman opens package: “Sometimes I even get a tip”

At least once a week, I hear the postman Ricardo Nunes (39) say “I’m here” in a friendly way. Fortunately, there are people like him whose good mood automatically infects others. No matter what the weather is or what else is going on in the world: Nunes is always in a good mood. It’s time to invite the postman for an interview.

Blick: How long have you been working as a postman and how did you get into this job?
Nunes: “I have been working at the post office for 12 years. I am originally from Portugal and moved to Switzerland in 2007. After working in construction for a few years, a friend tipped me off to contact the post office.”

How is your working day going concretely?
“The alarm clock goes off at five in the morning and soon I am at the Urdorf ZH distribution centre. After a short morning session, a colleague and I load into the mail truck and scan each package. I deliver about 250 parcels a day on my tour of the city of Zurich. I usually get back to Urdorf at 3 pm and get off work.”

Do they treat their wine packages with special care?
“Yes, of course, I can usually see what’s inside by looking at the package. I’m more careful than ever when it comes to wine or electronics.”

Do you drink wine yourself?
“In any case! My favorites are Portuguese red wines from the Dão, Douro and Alentejo regions. A good bottle of wine is a must when barbecue on the weekends.»

What do you like about being a postman?
“Contact with people. There are also many elderly or lonely people who are clearly happy when they can exchange a word or two with me. These encounters motivate me a lot. Sometimes I even get a tip, chocolate or a bottle of wine.”

And how do you deal with slightly more difficult people?
“Of course, it may be rare that someone doesn’t say good morning to me, but I have to live with that. Sometimes people don’t answer my phone so I have to leave a welcome invitation in the mailbox. However, it is claimed that I did not ring the bell after that. If someone complains to the post office, the customer complaint always reaches me and I have to respond to it. Not only criticism, but also praise is conveyed. »

What qualities does a postman need to do an excellent job?
“To me, the most important things are intimacy, reliability and physical fitness. Flexibility is also appreciated. Sometimes the group manager calls me and asks another coworker to get compensation for the refund. It’s important to help each other when time permits.”

So what do they do when they’re not in the yellow car?
“I like to spend my free time with my family. I have two small children, two and four years old. I also meet with my colleagues from time to time. And I’m a passionate motorcyclist.”
