New ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Justice League’ movies are coming – and both could change the future of DC cinema

It was probably the most inauspicious time for San Diego Comic-Con, as the current double strike in Hollywood meant the fair was smaller than usual, at least for movie and series fans. Who would want to announce their upcoming movie or series when the entire cast is fighting for a fair wage and therefore not allowed to advertise the projects etc.?

Of course there were a few film and series reports at Comic Con that make nerd hearts beat faster. One of the most exciting news is that Warner is currently working on the implementation of two cult comics. In addition to a new one “Guardians” movie is also located “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earthsin development.

Both films are overseen by the new DC executive duo James Gunn And Peter Saffron produced and should be available as VoD in 2024. The new JL adventure in particular could have an impact on the future of DC cinema…

The end of the DC multiverse?

Bee “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths‘ is one of the most iconic comic book series in DC history. Released between 1985 and 1986, the 12-episode series was a crossover that ended the concept of the multiverse in the DC cosmos while chronicling the demise of popular comic book characters, including Barry Allen as The Flash.

So could we be expecting the DC multiverse’s merger with “Crisis On Infinite Earths”? The series was already used in the comics to make it easier for new readers to enter the DC world.

And with new leadership duo James Gunn and Peter Safran planning a tighter DC world, with all movies, series, and games more aligned, it’s entirely possible that this animated film will play a key role in reshaping the comics universe.

Due to the film’s misleading title as part of the New DC Universe (DCU), Speculation arose over the weekend that Crisis On Infinite Earths would be part of the DC reboot. However, James Gunn seems to have put a stop to that with a comment on the social network Threads. And the misleading announcement tweet is now gone.

We will probably not get a definitive answer to that until 2024.

“Watchmen”: R rating gives fans hope

Already in 2009 Zack Snyder put down the graphic novel Cult author Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” has been sympathetically adapted for the big screen. And the HBO series, which is based on the comic but tells the story independently, is also very popular with fans.

Like the previous modifications, the animated movie “Watchmen” will refer to the template. It is not yet known whether it will be a retelling of the material or possibly even a continuation. But one thing is certain:

Since an R-rating (i.e. no juvenile release) has already been announced for the film, we can assume that the renewed excursion into the bleak world of dubious heroes will pick up again.
