Rhodes forest fire out of control: hundreds of tourists evacuated from hotels

On the south side of the holiday island of Rhodes, several hotels and guest houses were evacuated on Saturday afternoon. A large forest fire has gotten out of control. Hundreds of tourists had to be taken to safety in Coast Guard buses and boats.

Affected are hotels on the coast of Kiotari, about 55 kilometers south of the city of Rhodes. That reports the state radio. “It is the most difficult fire we have to fight,” said a spokesman for the Greek fire service.

Wind force six is blowing in the Rhodes region. “The smoke is so heavy that it is difficult to breathe. People will be taken to the small town of Gennadi, from where they will be accommodated in other hotels,” Konstantinos Traraslias, deputy mayor of Rhodes, told Athens news channel Skai. (sda/dpa)
