It is one of the most beautiful wine traditions: when their child is born, parents buy a Bordeaux from the same vineyard. As soon as the children grow up, the ripening wine treasures are passed on to the offspring. But what if it later turns out that the children never drank wine?

That’s what Blick reader Jeannette Steinle is asking right now. He bought two wooden crates of 12 Bordeaux when his children were born: Château de Pez 1998 and Château d’Angludet 2000. “They want to sell it because our children don’t drink wine. What is the value of wine per bottle?” Exciting for our wine expert.

Two Bordeaux are so precious

First to Château de Pez 1998. The vineyards of this chateau span over 42 hectares in the commune of Saint-Estèphe and mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties are planted. Classified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, the chateau has been owned by the Louis Roederer champagne group since 1995. The 1998 crop currently trades at around 50 francs per 0.75 liter bottle.

Further south, about 45 minutes by car, is the Château d’Angludet winery in the municipality of Margaux. Unlike Château de Pez, Château d’Angludet is a family business and has also been used as a residence since 1961. The same grape varieties dominate over 32 hectares as in Château de Pez, producing a full-bodied and structured red wine. For 2000 vintages, retailers currently have to calculate around 60 francs per 0.75 liter bottle.
