Of “Barbie” And “Oppenheimer“As of today, there are two long-awaited reboots in German cinemas. Anyone who’s been browsing the internet for the past few weeks should have noticed something of the media buzz surrounding the shared release date for the opposite summer blockbusters. After all, both films are quite interesting for filmmakers:
While the physics drama comes from Christopher Nolan (“Inception”), who manages to turn even uncomfortable subjects into intelligent entertainment cinema, “Barbie” comes from the creative mind of Greta Gerwig. The director has built a sworn fanbase over the past few years with “Lady Bird” and the masterpiece “Little Women” and has established himself as an exciting new voice in Hollywood.
So who says you can’t enjoy one and the other? And so crossover memes were diligently posted on social networks under the hashtag “Barbenheimer” and called for just organizing a personal double. Of course, some cinema operators have also caught wind of the move and are now officially offering the aforementioned double feature. A great idea, but one that requires a lot of stamina: Comes in doubles “Barbenheimer” to a colossal runtime of 294 minutes!
“Barbie” Or “Oppenheimer”: Which Is The Better Movie?
But if you have a clear favorite among the new releases and want to see a tough fight between the two blockbuster heavyweights, you’re probably wondering what movie is next.
If you look at the FILMSTARTS reviews, it’s an exciting race: Lead critic Christoph Petersen gave “Barbie” a whopping 4 out of 5 stars. Moreover, the anti-patriarchal satire in pink even confirms that this is a maybe. And yet Greta Gerwig’s journey to Barbieland “Oppenheimer” must admit defeat in the end. Christopher Nolan’s research into the creation of the atomic bomb received a magnificent 4.5 stars from editor Björn Becher, but just missed the top score. Finally it says:
It’s 1-0 for “Oppenheimer”. An assessment that is also the same on the assessment platform is mirrored. Here, Nolan’s new movie is slightly ahead of “Barbie” in the critics’ ratings (as of July 20, 2023) with a score of 92%, which is still a fantastic 89%.
We can wholeheartedly recommend both works. Even more important than our rating are of course the raw numbers at the box office. By Monday at the latest, we will know which of the two summer blockbusters is ahead and has attracted more viewers to the cinemas.
