Nature has always fascinated people. Trips to water bodies in particular have a relaxing effect on many people. A light splash of water or a wild rustle, as well as the glow of the moving element in the sun, quickly make you forget the stress of everyday life.

Waterfalls are often the highlight of hikes and can be found in many parts of Switzerland. You can find ten of the best examples below.

1. Rhine Falls

With a width of 150 meters, Europe’s largest waterfall is located in Schaffhausen. The Rhine flows loudly down 23 meters. This tourist attraction can also be admired on a boat tour, where you can even reach the big rock that stands in the middle of the Rhine Falls. There you can watch the impressive natural scenery closely. An experience you won’t soon forget. The castles of Laufen and Wörth can also be reached by boat.

2. Doubs sauté

In the canton of Neuchâtel, the River Doubs forms a 27-metre-high waterfall that makes the romantic riverside landscape even more picturesque. Saut du Doubs is just above the border between Switzerland and France. This waterfall can also be watched closely on boat tours in Lac de Brenets.

3. Staubbach Waterfall

With a total drop of 297 meters in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Staubbach Falls, with its numerous waterfalls, has a breathtaking natural beauty: the water is atomized by the wind and sprayed in a white spray on its way to the valley that gives the Staubbach Falls its name. It can only be accessed from a rock gallery in the summer.

Exciting: In 1779, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) is said to have been inspired by this landscape to write “Song of Spirits Over the Waters”.

4. Giessbach Waterfalls

Giessbach is heading towards Lake Brienz with white cascades. If you want to see the world-famous Giessbach Falls, over 400 meters high in the Bernese Oberland, you can walk along the hiking trails, some over bridges and even under running water.

The fairy tale Grandhotel Giessbach also offers views of the waterfall that descends 14 floors from the high valleys of the Sägistal-Faulhorn region. Europe’s oldest funicular has been there since 1879 and still transports tourists from the lake to the Grand Hotel.

5. Trummelbach Falls

They are the largest underground waterfalls in Europe, found like many waterfalls in Bern’s Lauterbrunnen Valley, and disappear loudly and bubbling into the interior of the mountain. They are also part of the Swiss federal inventory of nature and natural monuments of national importance and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so they should not be missing from this list.

With a tunnel lift, you can reach the ten glacial waterfalls of the Trümmelbach Falls, with a total roar of more than 140 meters. Depending on the weather, they are accessible from April to November.

6. Reichenbach Falls

The seven-step Reichenbach Falls in Meiringen BE is world famous thanks to the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930): It was at this waterfall that he staged the death of his successful fictional character, Sherlock Holmes. The nearly 300-metre-high Reichenbach waterfall in Schattenhalb BE impresses hikers, especially from May to October as it carries a lot of water.

You can get there by a nostalgic cable car and reach three viewing platforms that allow you to see the Reichenbach Falls from different angles.

7. Ducan Falls

Ducan Waterfall in Davos GR is ideal for a family trip as you can walk from Sertig Dörfli to the waterfall in almost half an hour. The route is also suitable for prams. You are walking along Sertigbach in the middle of meadows and Alps. On the way, you can enjoy the Swiss nature in all its splendor, accompanied by a view of the Ducan waterfall.

8. Berglistüber

Three Fätschbach waterfalls can be observed between Urnerboden and Linthal in the canton of Glarus. The middle one is more than 40 meters high and is called Berglistüber. It is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Switzerland.

You can get behind the falling water bodies at your own risk and be enchanted by the magnificent view of the water curtain. The road to Berglistüber, which used to be an easy road, has recently been widened.

9. Seerenbach Falls

Anyone interested in spectacular waterfalls, St. Gallen will enjoy the view of the Seerenbach Falls near Betlis on Lake Walen: from an altitude of 585 meters, bodies of water flow through the gorge walls in three stages. The second stage of this waterfall is 305 meters, making it one of the highest in Switzerland. The water then continues underground and rises on a steep rock face of the Rin spring as the last of the three stages.

On the slopes behind the source is a huge cave system, about three kilometers of which has been explored by cave divers.

10. Thursday Falls

st. The two cascades of Säntisthur in Gallen are known as the Thur Falls. These two steps total 23 meters high, and the 13-meter Upper Thurfall is three meters higher than the Lower Thurfall. It takes about 15 minutes to reach an easy hiking trail from Unterwasser, and you can enjoy the roaring view from the three viewing platforms. Waterfalls are especially impressive after rain or when there is a lot of meltwater.

11. Foroglio Waterfall

Foroglio TI waterfall in Val Bavona, a typical glacial valley of Ticino, adds a special charm to the landscape panorama. The water from Val Calnègia falls 108 meters down from the rock face into the valley and looks almost like a fairy tale. The old stone houses and 15th-century church in Foroglio are equally fascinating.

From Sonlerto, you can easily walk to the famous Foroglio waterfall in about an hour.
