Almost on vacation and already sick: According to experts, the so-called entertainment sickness is a typical phenomenon in our meritocracy.

How does the leisure disease manifest itself?

“Many people find it difficult to shut down and rest in their spare time,” says Frank Wieber, 49, Professor of Health Promotion and Promotion and Prevention at the University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in Zurich. “They’re often so caught up in the hamster wheel that they don’t even notice they’re tired.” As a result, you get sick as soon as you relax. Typical symptoms of this so-called recreational sickness are headaches, nausea, weakness and fatigue. Flu-like colds may also occur. According to Wieber, the disease of leisure is a harbinger of burnout. “It’s a typical symptom of our meritocracy.”

What are the reasons?

Wieber says our bodies go into emergency mode when we’re stressed. The hormones adrenaline and cortisol ensure that our energy reserves are released and directed towards tasks at work or in daily life. “Stress hormones keep us productive and prevent us from getting tired or sick in the short term.” If stress lasts for weeks or months, our immune system and health are weakened. As soon as we have a chance to recover, our bodies come out of emergency mode. Then we feel exhausted and react particularly sensitively to pathogens.

The more stressed we are at work, the more stressed we are in our free time.

Who is particularly affected?

People with a tendency towards perfectionism and who do not want to hand over their work are particularly affected by the leisure sickness. This used to be assumed to apply primarily to bosses and managers, Wieber says. Today, we know that leisure sickness can affect all employees. “Anyone who places high demands on themselves in everyday life and allows themselves to rest for just a few minutes will also have trouble relaxing in their spare time.” Those affected also have trouble using their leisure time as strictly as their work. “Whether they’re hiking, at weekend brunch, or on vacation at the beach, they stick to their performance thinking habits.”

How can I prevent this?

According to Wieber, people who work at high frequency for long periods of time should learn to incorporate breaks into their daily lives. “We can’t relax on command. Anyone who struggles all year and puts relaxation only on summer vacations fails. » It’s much better to take regular breaks from work and daily life on weekdays, at lunch time or in the morning before work. “These can be short relaxation or breathing exercises Or you can meet up with friends, play sports or listen to music.” If such a change in daily life and lifestyle is not possible, Wieber says, “You should at least try to reduce your workload in the week before the holiday season and not work hard until the last minute.” it becomes easy and the body has the opportunity to enter the resting mode before setting off.
