The Barbie movie premieres on July 20 in Switzerland. You know, the plastic doll with blonde hair, blue eyes, an anatomically impossible body, and mostly pink clothes, pink interiors, houses and pink plastic cars. Pink, pink, pink – so many shades of pink were used on set during filming that there was a worldwide shortage of the shade “Fluorescent Fuchsia”, as the architectural trade magazine “Architectural Digest” reported.

Something strange about this color. Above all, it represents girlish innocence, at least according to the sales and marketing departments of global children’s clothing and toy companies. Anyone who has raised or currently has raised children in the past 15 years knows how very young girls are conditioned to all shades of pink and rosy-red (and how very young boys are discouraged from thinking it could be a child). Also a great color).

Innocence on one side, sex on the other.

However, pink is also a color that represents sexuality. Figuratively, not figuratively, but quite concretely: pink is our lips, which bleed more when we are sexually aroused and therefore become a little redder, pink is female (and sometimes male) genitals, pink is Anglo-Saxon-European, USA, Canadian and Australian Scandinavian culture is also the nipples of most women.

Now you can wear rose-colored glasses and wonder why little girls in our society are so aggressively conditioned to find this color of everything ultimate. Or take off your rose-colored glasses and don’t be surprised given the sheer amount of pornography and misogyny in our society – the youngest girls on porn sites are often referred to as prostitutes – assume there’s a connection. In any case, the advent of the Internet that made pornography ubiquitous and the trend of pink and rose, increasingly sold by marketing firms as the best color for little girls, began almost simultaneously: about fifteen to twenty years ago.

Rebels wear pink, tough guys too

But pink also means rebellion, at least when it comes to clothing. Even in the 1978 US cult film Grease, the “Pink Ladies”, a group of high school students who wear pink jackets in their “club” to distinguish themselves from other students, are far from embodying innocence. On the contrary: “Pink Ladies” leader Rizzo (Stockard Channing) even has sex with her boyfriend and is afraid of getting pregnant – and all this takes place in the late 1950s.

Despite all the connotations of girl innocence, or perhaps because of it, it has recently been recaptured by men of color to show extreme vulgar masculinity. More recently, rappers wear ambivalent pink as an expression, while simultaneously uttering extremely sexual or misogynistic remarks that cannot be reproduced in a family Sunday magazine.

With his partially fascist aesthetic, Rammstein singer Till Lindemann (60) is also an example of this weirdly over-the-top celebrity masculinity wrapped in soft pink. He sings about Rohypnol in a glass so you can sleep undisturbed or rape a woman, or even wraps himself in a cute pink fluffy coat with totally obnoxious makeup. It’s like saying: I’m so obviously ultra tough that I can dress like a girl and I’m still the toughest guy in the universe.

A multi-layer color for a multi-layer film

So pink is far from embodying innocence. So it’s going really well with the new Barbie movie. Because it must be pretty complex. Early critics were enthusiastic about the film, which was simply supposed to combine hilarious comedy, great set design, and brilliant acting performances from Margot Robbie (32) as Barbie and Ryan Gosling (42) as Ken. intelligent cultural criticism.
