49 people affected by salmonella in “Children’s chocolate”.

Last year, 49 people in Switzerland became infected with salmonella after eating Ferrero’s “Children’s Chocolate”. The patients were mainly children, the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) announced.

The cases were spread across 15 cantons and those affected were three years old on average. The daily newspaper “24 Heures” reported on it for the first time. Investigations suggested that the origin of the salmonella contamination lay in a Belgian processing plant where “Kinder” branded chocolate products were manufactured, the BAG further announced on Monday.

The outbreak affected 17 states. According to the BAG, the recalls and withdrawals initiated reduced the risk of further infections. On April 7, Ferrero Schweiz AG voluntarily withdrew from the market all “Kinder” brand products manufactured in the Belgian company and sold in Switzerland. According to the BAG, hospital admissions were close to 50 percent in all countries through April 12, 2022. (saw/sda)
