Just because things were the way they were then doesn’t mean they have to stay that way. This is also evident in many live-action adaptations of famous Disney classics. In which sometimes known characters are omitted, while new ones are added. Plus, the entertaining, sharp cartoon role models regularly become epic blockbusters with plenty of running time.
What seems to cause a lot of displeasure with many, however, is the cast: after Halle Bailey, who received a lot of racist comments because of her casting of “Arielle, the Mermaid”, now Rachel Zegler seems to be the new “Snow White”, similar to Bloom .
Excitement over Snow White
The actress, who has Colombian roots, made her film debut in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story in 2021 and promptly won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Maria. Since then, the 22-year-old’s career has been on the upswing – but that also has its downside, as it turns out:
The first on the weekend Set photos from the shooting of “Snow White” for furore on the internet. While it was initially unclear who is in the snapshots at all – presumably Rachel Zegler’s stand-in as Snow White – it was another discussion about skin color started.
Like Halle Bailey as a red-haired mermaid, Zegler doesn’t fit the role of the Disney princess she embodies. After all, her skin isn’t a little “snow white” like that of the Snow White we know. At the same time, however, there are also positive comments about the casting that are being included in the debate. But Actress Rachel Zegler has now made it clear via Twitter that she has finally had enough of the “nonsensical discourse”:
“I appreciate the love I receive from everyone who supports me online,” Zegler said in the post. “But please don’t meet me in the course of the nonsensical discourse about my casting. I really don’t want to see that.“
She ended the tweet with a series of images showing young Rachel Zegler dressed as various princesses. Zegler’s all-important comment, which should actually (but probably won’t) end the debate: “I hope every child knows they can be a princess.” There’s no better way to say it.
2024 in the cinema: “Snow White” and no (!) Seven dwarfs
“Snow White‘ will hit theaters on March 21, 2024 – and already differs greatly in title from the 1937 original. Unlike “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, there will be no dwarfs in the new edition.
Disney confirmed some time ago that they were taking a “completely different approach” – and that Snow White would meet “seven magical creatures” instead. And that’s not all, the male protagonist of the well-known legend also experiences an innovation:
The 2024 version should differ from the original in many ways. The movie’s trailer will probably only give you an idea of how far these changes can go, but it will probably take some time.
Besides Zegler, the cast also includes ‘Wonder Woman’ actress Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and Ansu Kabia, who is also known from ‘Sandman’, as Huntsman. Directed by The Amazing Spider-Man and (500) Days Of Summer creator Marc Webb.
