Dress code when it’s hot: How comfortable can you dress in the office?

Shorts or flip-flops are always talked about in the office in summer. Is it okay to go to the office in Bermuda shorts?

Office workers are also affected by the heat – especially if they work in rooms without air conditioning.

How comfortable should you dress for daily life to go well, even in temperatures above 30 degrees?

Shorts taboo

There is no general rule about what you can and cannot wear. First of all, it depends on the type of business and the internal regulations of the company. However, some principles can be derived. “It makes a clear difference whether you stay in touch with clients or not,” explains Denise, style consultant. Clothing is part of the first impression and should fit the company philosophy, which is generally elegant.

Europe is currently being hit by a heat wave. Temperatures are rising every day and can even reach 38 degrees. Do you really have to sweat in a jacket in this weather? “The best thing is a multifunctional outfit, such as a blazer that you can pull off in the back office,” says the style consultant.

But for the man in the office, shorts are taboo. Therefore, it would be beneficial to be able to wear open-toe shoes for storage and cooling in the back office. “Full gear is still valid for customer appointments.”

Sleeves are an absolute must

Besides the classic costume, women have other options: “You can wear dresses or skirts that should be knee-length.” In addition to the length, the collar and sleeves also play a role. The neckline should not be too revealing and whether short or long sleeves are a must.

It is also important that the clothes are not too transparent and the stomach is closed. The hubless doesn’t work at all. Hot pants are also inappropriate. “Anything too sexy should be saved for fun.”

«Flip-flops are part of the holiday outfit»

However, for both genders, this applies: “Open shoes are not appropriate when in contact with customers because they may not look hygienic.” You can wear nice sandals or platform shoes in the office where there is no customer contact. But there’s one thing the stylist doesn’t like: «Flip-flops! They’re part of the holiday outfit!»

So what would a good casual outfit look like in the office? “A nice T-shirt with a plain knee-length skirt, or a tie-less suit for the guy in the back office where he can take off his jacket,” Denise says. “However, you can also discuss with the executive floor whether some exceptions can be made in this heat.”

If the tops still want to keep their rule, you can help with lightweight materials. Cotton and viscose are particularly airy, as are the occasional silk or linen, as they have a cooling effect. “But polyester, nylon, and acrylic should be avoided. You’ll sweat much faster, and sweat stains are the last thing you want to show a client.”

This is how you get rid of the heat

HR managers recommend: It’s best to orient yourself to the boss, stay a little more conservative if in doubt:

  • Suits and costumes made of light-coloured, lightweight fabrics (eg linen, cotton, silk) – the smoother the weave, the cooler.
  • Even in summer, wearing an athlete prevents the formation of sweat stains on the shirt.
  • Leave a bond above 30 degrees. Exceptions: customer-facing jobs and if you have air conditioning.
  • Loafers instead of lace-up men’s shoes. Women’s shoes are always at least closed in front.
