Researchers are using new AI technology to get a live look at processes in the brain. (icon image)

Using artificial intelligence (AI), the researchers presented a complex set of measurement and processing steps. It allows very accurate images to be made over time. It is a kind of 3D live observation of living tissue.

Because high resolution images and 3D reconstructions are obtained with the new system and the sample is not destroyed unlike other methods, the method is called “Live Information Optimized Nanoscopy Enabling Saturated Segmentation” (LION).

Using lab-grown brain tissue, brain organoids, and samples from the hippocampus of test animals, the researchers led by Johann Danzl and the study’s lead author, Philipp Velicky, and his colleagues at ISTA, showed that their approach works.
