“The Walking Dead: Dead City” kicked off one of (so far) three new offshoots of the zombie franchise in the US on June 18, 2023, continuing the main series after it has ended with several fan favorites. In Germany, too, the spin-off with former archenemies Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is eagerly awaited. All the more unfortunate that it is still no local launch date let alone a TV or streaming home there (the previous “Walking Dead” series ended up being redistributed quite wildly in Germany).
If your curiosity about the latest “Walking Dead” series is getting unbearable and you don’t want to be satisfied with trailers, the American broadcaster AMC, which has just screened the fourth episode, now has a special gift for you: The full first episode of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” is now completely free to access in Germany on the official “Walking Dead” YouTube channel (at the beginning of the video you see the two minute trailer again, then the episode starts):
The only catch for anyone following the Walking Dead universe in German dub: The episode “Dead City” is only available in the original English on YouTube. Nevertheless, it’s the best opportunity yet to get a taste of the series and see if you should be more or less excited about the (hopefully soon) German start.
The first of several ‘Walking Dead’ sequels
The Walking Dead: Dead City picks up a few years after The Walking Dead ended. After an attack on Hilltop, Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim) is kidnapped to New York by a ruthless man known only as The Croat (Željko Ivanek). Since Negan of all people has a past with the Croat, Maggie goes in search of the hated killer of her great love Glenn and reluctantly asks him for help. Together they head to Manhattan, overrun by hordes of the undead…
So while Dead City shows us how Maggie and Negan fared after the latest Walking Dead episode, the upcoming spin-off The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon delivers the same for France-stranded fan favorite Daryl (Norman Reedus) and returning Carol ( Melissa McBride).
And in 2024, the miniseries “The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne” will finally see the big comeback of former franchise figurehead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Let’s hope it doesn’t take that long for the upcoming series to find their way to Germany…
