This year the Züri Fäscht takes place in its place. For the people of Zurich, this is the feast of holidays. Zurich city center turns into a giant festival area with fireworks displays, drone shows, music, parties, concerts and attractions. Three traditional fireworks, the most popular elements of the festival, will also characterize Züri Fäscht 2023.
Many pets who are panting, drooling, shivering, running away or immobilized react to fireworks with fear and stress. They can’t classify fireworks and crackers as they hear very little. Also, their sense of hearing is much more sensitive than humans. Dogs hear at least twice as well as we do, cats even better. Fear of fireworks often increases as the pet ages because hearing changes over time.
It’s best to keep them indoors, as both the loud sound and light of fireworks can scare away pets. Cats or dogs outside may be startled by the noise and run away in panic.
Never leave your pet home alone when near fireworks. Close the windows and darken the room. For some pets, having the radio or television on also calms them down.
Stressed out animals either withdraw or seek the closeness of their owners. But you should avoid overreacting to the fear response, according to the Zurich Animal Welfare Service. This encourages the animal’s behavior rather than removing its fear. Instead of stroking and caressing, it is better to ignore the fearful behavior and thereby give the animal peace and security. The calmer the owner, the faster the animal will calm down.
Take your dog out for the last time in the early evening. This way you will prevent them from being outside during the fireworks. Make sure your dog is secured with a leash in case you want to watch fireworks with the dog. It can also be helpful to have treats on hand so the dog associates the noise with something positive. But the reward should come at the right time, not when the animal shows signs of stress, so that his fear does not increase.
According to animal welfare agency Four Paws, tranquilizers should only be used in exceptional circumstances and only in consultation with a veterinarian. A good alternative is to dress the dog in a T-shirt, provided the apartment is not too hot. This gives it a sense of security. (wdb)
