Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me By Your Name”) is one of the most interesting contemporary directors. But the Italian filmmaker is not only active in the cinema and regularly delivers beautiful visual experiences. Also in the field of series, Guadagnino managed to convince in collaboration with HBO with “We Are Who We Are” (2020). As it has now become known, Guadagnino will be taking on another series for his next project – and it really does sound extremely interesting.
It is an HBO adaptation of the novel The Shards by American psycho author Bret Easton Ellis. The focus is on 17-year-old Bret, at whose school a new student named Robert shows up. This is not only intelligent, but almost magically attracts Bret. The fact that Robert carries a dark secret doesn’t stop him and Bret from becoming ever closer friends. When a serial killer kills several teens, Bret grows increasingly paranoid and isolates himself.
The Shards series would have three seasons of ten episodes each. While Luca Guadagnino is expected to direct all episodes, Bret Easton Ellis is credited with writing every episode of the series. In the series, there should also be subplots that do not appear in the novel in this form. The collaboration between HBO, Luca Guadagnino and Bret Easton Ellis already sounds so interesting that the series will probably become one of the most wanted projects of the coming years for many people.
Before the series “The Shards” awaits us, we can first look forward to Luca Gudagnino’s new feature film: “Challengers – Rivals”. The tennis drama with “Dune” star Zendaya opens in cinemas in Germany on September 14, 2023. It’s all about a complicated love triangle (Zendaya, Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor) that will keep the tension in the air for years to come, and not just on the tennis court.
