Château Lafite Rothschild sounds like a wine that is not only noble, but also expensive. This is because when the famous Bordeaux château was classified in 1855, it was one of five wineries in the Médoc and Graves subregions to be classified with the highest possible Premier Grand Cru Classé rating. This classification was based on the prices traded for wines, which at the time was among the highest prices in all of Bordeaux.

The main grape variety planted on an area of approximately 110 hectares is Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The winery has also been working for several years to grow the vineyards organically. Meanwhile, Château Lafite Rothschild should not be confused with Château Mouton Rothschild. Although both wineries are home in the Pauillac region and bear the Rothschild name, they have different owner families behind them.

That’s how much a bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild 1963 is worth

Unfortunately, our Blick reader Michael Enderli has been unlucky several times. On the one hand, the 1963 vintage is one of the weakest of the last century. In 1962, a freezing winter was followed by a cool, rainy spring, followed by an equally rainy summer and autumn. The result: fungal diseases and in small quantities. The resulting alcohol levels were below 10 percent, so large amounts of sugar were added to the fermented wines to increase the levels.

The condition of the bottle also shows obvious flaws. The label is partially torn and the capsule appears to rust a bit. So what to do? I strongly advise against drinking it, because the contents of the bottle should no longer be almost edible. While its price is probably somewhere between 300 and 500 francs, there is still the possibility of selling it to a collector. Gift giving could also be an option, perhaps for a 60th birthday for someone born in 1963? But as I said, although to note that the wine is probably no longer enjoyable.
