Winners of the international photo contest 2023

The 2023 International Photo Contest sought to motivate adults to emphasize the presence of this science in everyday life with their photos.

The Panama Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematics (FUNDAPROMAT) announced the winners this week.

The first place in the competition went to de Alan Moreno Flores from Panama cwith photo “Logarithmic spiral of blackberry Chiricana”.

Currently, Moreno Flores works as a teacher at the Josefa Montero de Vásquez school located in Boquete, Chiriquí province.

In this academic institution, the teacher Moreno Flores, Q.Who loves photography, teaches groups of students with special needs in the mornings from the first to sixth grades and in the afternoons to groups of seventh, eighth and ninth grades.

Moreno Flores said: “With the photo I sent, I wanted to help people see that mathematics goes beyond abstract language and formulas.”

“On the contrary, I wanted to make it clear that they are off the board and that we can find them in all natural environments, even in the DNA of our bodies,” he explained.

While the second place went to a Panamanian Yaline del Carmen Cedeno Samudiowith his photo “Mathematics, beauty and nature, the key to success”.

Third place went to a Peruvian woman Victor Hugo Moya Padillawith his photo “A tree that reduces its surface area”.

Furthermore, Spanish Mireya Sanchez Ramirez with the photo “Lost in the Mathematical Park” he received an honorable mention.

According to Dr. Jeanette Shakalli, CEO of FUNDAPROMAT, the response from the participants was “extraordinary, because we were able to see creative images, which makes us very excited since the goal is to encourage the taking of innovative photos that contain a message that highlights the importance of mathematics in our daily life life”.

Criteria

To select the winner, the jury used the following evaluation criteria: mathematical value (the participant had to clearly state in the description of the photo how mathematics in his environment is related to the sent photo), photo quality (must not be blurry, with appropriate lighting and focus), Writing (photo description must be coherent, without grammatical and spelling errors), Creativity (with the photo, the participant had to present in an ingenious way that mathematics surrounds us) and Originality (it was necessary that the photo and its description be qualified as new, unique and innovative).
