At an altitude of 80 kilometers: Virgin Galactic plans first commercial flight into space

Richard Branson’s space tourism company Virgin Galactic (pictured) plans to make its first commercial flight into space on Thursday. (archive image)

During the 90-minute flight, two Italian Air Force members and an Italian researcher want to conduct a series of experiments. An aircraft carrier will initially launch the “VSS Unity” spacecraft from a runway in the US state of New Mexico to an altitude of about 15 kilometers.

The spaceship, which looks like a private jet, will then fly over 80 kilometers. There, passengers spend a few minutes in zero gravity before “VSS Unity” returns to earth.

Founded by British billionaire Richard Branson, the company completed its test flight back into space at the end of May after a hiatus of nearly two years. Virgin Galactic’s space tourism program has been repeatedly delayed, notably after an accident that killed a pilot in 2014. (SDA)
