Prevent razor burn: You make these mistakes when shaving

For many people, shaving is part of their daily grooming routine. However, many mistakes are made in this process.

Skin irritation after shaving has probably happened to everyone. For example, many women shave their legs regularly, and men sometimes shave their beards every day. If the skin becomes irritated, redness and even injury are not only unsightly, but also irritating: burning and itching are common side effects. It’s best to let sensitive areas rest for a few days before further hair removal, so as not to increase the irritation. This allows the skin to heal optimally and is ready for the next, gentler shave.

It is important not only to have the right equipment for shaving, but also to properly care for the skin before and after – this is the only way to achieve silky smooth skin. However, the following mistakes are often made while shaving, which leads to redness.

Mistake 1: Not preparing the skin for shaving

Usually you just want a quick shave, but you shouldn’t rush if you want a good result. Preparing the skin accordingly is often forgotten. To prevent ingrown hair, you should clean it with warm water and gently exfoliate.

Mistake 2: Using the wrong razor

The blunter the razor, the more likely it is to cause skin irritation as the blades no longer glide evenly over the skin. That’s why it’s important to change the razor regularly. It also makes sense to use a razor with several blades, as it also protects the skin. If the redness problem persists after shaving, it is better to switch to an electric shaver. There are even models that are waterproof and suitable for wet shaving.

Error 3: Do not use shaving cream

Wet shaving is considered the gentlest shave. To do this, apply shaving foam after cleaning, leave it for a few seconds, and then start removing the hairs. The foam allows the blades to glide almost smoothly over the skin. Unlike shower gel or soap, this softens the skin and hair, making shaving much easier. In addition, shaving foam often contains conditioning agents that soothe and moisturize the skin during shaving. After hair removal, the shaving cream is washed off.

Error 4: Clean the shaver incorrectly

After use, the blades should be thoroughly cleaned with cold and clean water. You can shake the appliance to dry, but never hit a solid object such as a sink – this also applies when shaving: this can cause the finest cracks in the blades, which can adversely affect the shave. The shaver should then be placed upright in a holder or cup provided for this purpose. It dries fastest, stays sharp longer and does not rust.

Error 5: Dry skin too roughly

To dry the skin, it should be patted dry with a soft towel. When you rush, you usually dry yourself out quickly and with a lot of friction – no matter how gentle the shave, this is not good for the skin later on and causes irritation.

Error 6: Don’t care about freshly shaved skin

After shaving, many forget to care for their skin. When you shave, the upper layer of the skin is intensely stretched and loses moisture, which can be restored with special aftershave lotions. Such products are available in liquid form, in the form of balm or cream and have a calming, regenerating and often anti-inflammatory effect. If you have sensitive skin and want to use a normal cream instead, you should make sure that there is no fragrance in it. Otherwise, acne may appear on the skin.
