In 2006, after the raubli font was removed from the compulsory education program, the province of Ontario reintroduced the somewhat dated-looking font in September. Education Secretary Stephen Lecce told CBC:
The font is introduced in primary school from the third grade. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Shelley Stag Peterson, a professor of curriculum, teaching and learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto. The Schraubli script should never have been removed from the curriculum.
Although not much research has been done on cord writing per se, bound writing has been shown to significantly improve not only writing skills, but reading skills as well. In addition, block letters require more working memory each time the pen leaves the paper.
Incidentally, in Switzerland the Schnurli script no longer exists: in 2021 all German-speaking cantons have replaced it with the so-called basic script.
